Scott Parker named England captain for Wednesday's friendly with the Netherlands at Wembley

The Spurs man has been praised for his fine performances this season both domestically and internationally, picking up the Vauxhall England Player of the Year award in the process.

Many had tipped Steven Gerrard to be handed the captain's armband, with the Huyton-born midfielder having captained the side on 15 previous occasions.

Lukas Podolski agrees personal terms with Arsenal

The 26-year-old is said to have reached an accord with the Gunners about a summer move that would see him join fellow Germany international Per Mertesacker at the Emirates

The Germany international's contract with the Billy Goats expires in 2013, and has repeatedly expressed his love for his hometown club. However, he has admitted frustration with the team's lack of progress in recent years, and earlier this year turned down the prospect of negotiations for a contract extension.

Lionel Messi’s not a great player, and as for Wayne Rooney... Pele

Written By Koka Albert on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 | 11:14 PM

WHEN Sir Alex Ferguson dubbed Wayne Rooney "The White Pele", the real deal was flattered but was hardly in agreement.

Typical of the attitude that made him the world's greatest footballer, Brazilian legend Pele feels Rooney, 26, has a long way to go before he can be talked about in the same breath as him.
Pele, 71, told The Sun on a visit to London: "I am a very big fan of Rooney. He always fights for the team. He is not too technical, his strength is his heart.
"He's a good player. But you can't really compare him to me. I scored a lot of goals. I don't know if Rooney has."

Mano Menezes laments Ronaldinho and David Luiz performances despite Brazil's victory over Bosnia & Herzegovina

Menezes laments David Luiz display

In a disjointed display, Brazil were lucky to leave Switzerland's AFG Arena with the win and have now gone an eight consecutive games unbeaten.

However, aspects of the Selecao's performance left Menezes with a bitter taste after they struggled past BiH and he was particularly displeased with Ronaldinho's role.

He told GloboEsporte: "I believe that Ronaldinho was below what Ronaldinho is.

"He failed to provide that passing quality which he usually gives."

The two-time World Player of the Year was replaced by Ganso in the second half and Menezes recognised the youngster's impact.

"Ganso came on and looked good and the improvement in that sector happened because the ball started to stay in that area.

"It is not always possible to keep the ball in front of the goal. Our rivals' system did not allow that."

Another player to put in a below-par performance was Chelsea's David Luiz but Menezes offered the defender some words of encouragement.

"We talked after the match and I told him that errors are part of a footballer's life. You cannot let that interfere with your entire game.

"As a defender, you cannot linger in that area of the pitch and let the attacker come away with the ball."

Brazil took the lead early on through Marcelo but were soon pegged back by Vedad Ibisevic. Sasa Papac then turned into his own net in the dying moments to gift Brazil the win.
