A sports enthusiast locked-in his own body after suffering a devastating stroke is today a step closer to being given the right for a doctor to end his 'intolerable' life for him.
Businessman Tony Nicklinson, 57, became a prisoner in his own body suddenly after suffering a catastrophic stroke in 2005.
The keen rugby player and sky-diver was left unable to move anything apart from his head and eyes. In a harrowing statement to the court, Mr Nicklinson said the best he can hope for is to be struck down by a life-threatening condition - because then he could refuse treatment
Right to die campaign: Tony Nicklinson has been left paralysed from the neck down and unable to speak following a catastrophic stroke in 2005. He is pictured, right, before the incident
The father-of-two now communicates by using a Perspex board and letters which he nods or blinks at to spell out words to wife Jane. He is washed, dressed and fed mashed-up food through a tube twice a day and has said he is fed-up with his 'undignified' life. He described the indignity of having to be 'fed like a baby' - but knowing unlike a baby he will never grow up.
Mr Nicklinson said he would never have called an ambulance when he suffered his stroke in June 2005 while on a business trip in Greece if he had known what would happen. In the statement he said: 'I cannot scratch if I itch, I cannot pick my nose if it is blocked and I can only eat if I am fed like a baby - only I won't grow out of it, unlike the baby.
Court battle: Tony with his wife Jane at his home in Melksham, Wiltshire. Since his stroke he has been left only able to move his eyes and his head
